TITLE: Director of Development

KACF has a rich and long-respected history of lifting up underserved Korean Americans in New York City. As a grantmaker, capacity builder, philanthropic thought leader and convener for New York City’s Korean American community, over the past two decades KACF has established its presence and reputation as the philanthropic leader that fosters a spirit of generosity and social change in its community. The Foundation’s upcoming 20th anniversary in 2022, an energized board of directors, and a recently-completed strategic plan position KACF for a new phase of growth as it enters its next chapter.

KACF seeks an experienced Director of Development to serve on its senior leadership team and work with constituents across the organization and NYC’s Korean American community to shepherd in this new stage of growth. The Director of Development will lead an individual giving and major donor strategy centered around a series of annual convenings and events that inspire and engage KACF’s donor constituency. The individual will bring strategic focus along with a high level of energy, maturity, knowledge and enthusiasm for development to the role. Working in close partnership with the President and the Board of Directors, s/he will serve as a trusted fundraising thought leader and mobilizer who will marshal the organization’s resources—including board, staff, volunteers and other stakeholders—to achieve fundraising results that will ensure growth and sustainability for KACF.


  • Lead the development and execution of all of KACF’s individual giving-based fundraising strategy, including major gifts, fundraising events, individual donor cultivation and solicitation, and the annual fund.
  • In conjunction with the President, board members and development staff, create and implement annual and longer-term development plans with clear timelines, deliverables and assignment of responsibilities. Development plans will emphasize enhanced donor cultivation and stewardship to grow KACF’s donor base and inspire higher levels of giving and sustained engagement with the Foundation.
  • Foster strong, respectful and collaborative relationships with staff, board, volunteers and donors to develop focused development strategies, execute events and cultivation/stewardship activities, and create innovative and persuasive pitches and messaging.
  • Work in close partnership with KACF President, Development Co-Chairs and Board Chair to maximize board engagement in development, including managing, strengthening and expanding the Development Committee and serving as a liaison to the Board Affairs Committee.
  • Serve as a visible and engaged KACF ambassador at development- and program-related events (e.g., the annual Gala, Golf Classic, Giving Summit and other smaller donor and board cultivation events, meetings, and functions).
  • Manage the annual fund by developing strategy for direct mail appeals, including targeted appeals based on donor giving histories and areas of interests.
  • Manage internal development team who will carry out annual event planning and execution; annual fund appeals; data tracking, reporting and analysis; gift processing and acknowledgment; and other special development-related events and projects. Mentor and nurture team members and help them remain on track toward established department goals and timelines.


  • Mature, poised individual with exemplary leadership, strategic thinking, communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in a senior-level management position, with demonstrated ability to manage staff members and concurrent projects with grace, efficiency and good humor.
  • Has previously served in the capacity of Development Director (or other development leadership position), preferably for a community or other fundraising foundation.
  • Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s Degree in nonprofit management, public administration, or business administration is a plus, or equivalent experience.
  • Comfortable and adept at collaborating with, engaging and influencing people in all types of positions within the Foundation and in the New York City business world, including high net worth individuals.
  • Exemplary goal-setting, planning, prioritization and follow-up skills. The individual should be highly organized, proactive, and thoughtful. S/he must be able to lead the President, the development team, and the Board of Directors in developing annual development plans that include clear goals, schedules/timelines, assignment of responsibilities, and milestones.
  • Passion for the work of KACF and ability to authentically articulate and champion its mission.Familiarity with Korean American culture, language and traditions preferred; the right candidate will bring, or be able to expediently develop, a sound understanding of KACF’s constituencies, from board members and donors to the grantee partners and clients served by KACF.
  • Demonstrated success meeting fundraising targets from individual donors, corporations, and special events; deep understanding of donor cultivation, stewardship, and “moves management.”
  • Successful track record of personally identifying, cultivating and soliciting individual donors and corporations in the New York City area.
  • Successful record of board development and engagement.
  • Effective communicator; highly skilled in writing and public speaking; adept at crafting donor appeals and correspondence and other kinds of persuasive fundraising messaging.
  • Computer savvy, with experience with donor database management and systems.
  • Understanding of budgets and nonprofit finance.
  • Available to work during non-business hours (e.g., evenings, weekends) to support key events and opportunities.
